became </span><em><span>Fault Lines &amp; Emergence</span></em><span>. I owe you a confession: I wrote them as I went, week after week, with no overall plan. And yet, reading them back-to-back, something appeared that I hadn&#8217;t fully seen myself while writing them. A thread. The same one, from the very first issue.</span></p><p><span>So, a confession up front: if you&#8217;ve read these issues out of order, or dropped one or two along the way, you haven&#8217;t missed anything essential &#8212; but you may have missed the thread. I&#8217;m giving it to you today, before the new season starts, so we can pick back up on common ground.</span></p><p><span>The thread, in one sentence: </span><strong><span>the scarce strategic resource is no longer information &#8212; it&#8217;s discernment</span></strong><em><span>.</span></em><span> Everything else is a variation on that same idea, seen from a different angle.</span></p><p><strong><span>First movement &#10145;&#65039; the world is becoming harder to read.</span></strong><span> In </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/are-organizations-prepared-for-a"><span>Are organizations prepared for a permanently ambiguous world?</span></a></em><span>, I argued that ambiguity stops being a temporary anomaly and becomes a permanent condition. </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/the-age-of-overlapping-systems"><span>Contemporary shifts are transforming complexity itself</span></a></em><span> took the idea further: systems no longer replace one another, they accumulate. An energy transition doesn&#8217;t erase hydrocarbons &#8212; it adds a layer to them. AI doesn&#8217;t replace existing systems &#8212; it embeds itself into them. The world isn&#8217;t just moving faster. It&#8217;s structurally harder to read.</span></p><p><strong><span>Second movement &#10145;&#65039; AI isn&#8217;t what we think it is.</span></strong><span> </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/ai-does-not-create-power-it-reveals"><span>AI doesn&#8217;t create power. It reveals human systems</span></a></em><span> took apart from the idea that technology mechanically produces power &#8212; history shows it&#8217;s human coordination, not technology alone, that turns technical potential into lasting advantage. </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/the-conformity-paradox"><span>The Conformity Paradox</span></a><span> </span></em><span>went further still, almost against the prevailing narrative: by smoothing out reasoning, AI could make our organizations more conformist at the exact moment they need divergence.</span></p><p><strong><span>Third movement &#10145;&#65039; our decision-making mechanisms are cracking.</span></strong><span> </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/the-inflation-of-priorities"><span>The inflation of priorities</span></a></em><span> showed that when everything becomes urgent at once, prioritization itself breaks down. </span><em><a href="https://faultlinesandemergence.substack.com/p/governance-under-pressure-from-complexity"><span>Governance under the strain of complexity</span></a></em><span> concluded that the problem is no longer deciding &#8212; it&#8217;s knowing how to decide once the traditional reference points have disappeared.</span></p><p><span>Three movements, one question underneath all of them: are we still capable of discerning, together, what matters?</span></p><p><span>I&#8217;m not going to answer that question today. As new layers emerge, they create new forms of interdependence, making trade-offs more uncertain and governance far more demanding. Understanding this shift is becoming a prerequisite for collective discernment.</span></p><p><strong><span>Human Dynamics Group</span></strong><span>&#174; is a research, strategic advisory and executive development institute dedicated to the study of Human Dynamics.</span></p><h1>&#129718;&#129718;&#129718;</h1><h1><strong><span>Complexity Has Become a Catch-All Word</span></strong></h1><p><span>It has become almost commonplace to say that we live in an age of accelerating change. Innovation cycles are shortening, crises follow one another in rapid succession, economic cycles are becoming more volatile, and organizations are under constant pressure to adapt.</span></p><p><span>This diagnosis is not wrong.</span></p><p><span>But it is no longer sufficient.</span></p><p><span>One of the most profound shifts of our time has less to do with the speed of change than with a transformation in its nature. We are no longer witnessing the gradual replacement of one system by another.</span></p><p><span>Instead, we are entering a world in which systems accumulate, overlap and interact.</span></p><p><span>This evolution is giving rise to a form of complexity fundamentally different from the previous organizations have learned to manage over the past decades.</span></p><p><span>It is not simply </span><em><span>more</span></em><span> complex.</span></p><p><span>It is a different kind of complexity.</span></p><h2><span>From Sequential Systems to Layered Systems</span></h2><p><span>Much of industrial history can be understood as a succession of dominant systems. One technology gradually replaced another; one economic model superseded the previous one; one organizational architecture eventually rendered the old one obsolete. Change was largely understood as the transition from one relatively stable equilibrium to another.</span></p><p><span>Of course, these transitions were never instantaneous. Every major transformation involved a period of coexistence. For decades, legacy systems continued to operate while new ones progressively spread. Coal did not immediately replace wood. Electricity did not eliminate steam overnight. The internet did not erase traditional media.</span></p><p><span>Yet this coexistence was generally viewed as a transitional phase.</span></p><p><span>The underlying assumption was that a new equilibrium would eventually prevail.</span></p><p><span>It is precisely this assumption that is becoming less convincing today.</span></p><p><span>New systems no longer necessarily replace existing ones.</span></p><p><span>They are added to them.</span></p><p><span>The energy transition is not eliminating hydrocarbons; it is adding a new geopolitical layer to the geopolitics of fossil fuels. Digital technologies have not replaced physical infrastructures; they have become an additional layer built upon them. Artificial intelligence is not replacing existing information systems; it embeds itself within already complex technological architectures. Requirements related to cybersecurity, regulatory compliance or resilience do not replace pre-existing functions; they become permanent dimensions of all the others.</span></p><p><span>The novelty lies less in coexistence itself than in its permanence.</span></p><p><span>Every major transformation leaf behind an additional layer that continues to interact with those that came before. Complexity is therefore no longer evolving primarily through substitution.</span></p><p><span>It evolves through accumulation.</span></p><p><span>And this accumulation is transforming the conditions of governance. Each new layer generates interactions with the existing ones. Interdependencies multiply. Trade-offs become more demanding. Indirect effects become increasingly significant.</span></p><p><span>The challenge is therefore no longer simply to understand each system in isolation.</span></p><p><span>It is to understand what emerges from their continuous interaction.</span></p><p><span>Contemporary complexity, however, rests on a second dynamic that reinforces this accumulation.</span></p><p><span>It is the growing interdependence between systems themselves.</span></p><h2><span>When the Boundaries Between Systems Begin to Dissolve</span></h2><p><span>For a long time, the major functions of organizations and societies could be understood as relatively distinct domains. Energy belonged primarily to energy policy. Information systems were the responsibility of IT departments. Environmental issues were managed through dedicated policies. Cybersecurity was treated as a technical discipline. Human resources focused on skills and workforce management.</span></p><p><span>This separation was never absolute.</span></p><p><span>But it still allowed organizations to govern relatively distinct domains.</span></p><p><span>Today, that logic is rapidly fading.</span></p><p><span>Technological, geopolitical, regulatory, environmental and societal transformations do not merely accumulate.</span></p><p><span>They have become increasingly interdependent.</span></p><p><span>A decision taken in one domain now generates consequences across several others, often operating on different timescales and according to different institutional or economic logics.</span></p><p><span>The challenge, therefore, no longer stems simply from the growing number of variables that decision-makers must consider.</span></p><p><span>It stems from the multiplication of interactions between systems that were once governed separately.</span></p><p><span>This transformation can now be observed across almost every field.</span></p><p><span>In geopolitics, the energy transition has not displaced the geopolitics of hydrocarbons. Both now coexist. Yet energy issues are increasingly intertwined with industrial policy, critical minerals, supply chain security, digital infrastructure and great-power competition. The new geopolitical landscape does not replace the old one; it expands the web of interdependencies.</span></p><p><span>In industry, a modern factory can no longer be understood merely as a production system. It now combines industrial equipment, software, cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity requirements, environmental constraints, global supply chains and increasingly scarce skills. A technical decision quickly becomes an economic, digital, regulatory and human one.</span></p><p><span>In the corporate world, a similar evolution is taking place. Performance was once largely measured through trade-offs between cost, quality and growth. Today, executive teams must simultaneously balance financial performance, industrial sovereignty, supply chain resilience, regulatory compliance, reputation, cybersecurity, climate commitments and talent attraction. These dimensions do not simply accumulate; they constrain one another.</span></p><p><span>Public institutions face the same reality. An energy policy now shapes industrial policy, national security, public finances, diplomacy, digital infrastructure and social policy at the same time. The traditional boundaries between government departments increasingly fail to match the real boundaries of the problems they are expected to address.</span></p><p><span>Individuals themselves now live within layered and interconnected environments. Everyday life unfolds simultaneously across physical, digital, informational and algorithmic spaces. Decisions are influenced not only by direct human relationships, but also by digital platforms, recommendation systems, continuous information flows and automated mechanisms that increasingly shape our cognitive environment.</span></p><p><span>For leaders, this changes the nature of the challenge.</span></p><p><span>The task is no longer simply to understand each system.</span></p><p><span>It is to govern the interactions they produce.</span></p><h2><span>Organizations Are Still Designed for a Complexity That Is Disappearing</span></h2><p><span>This evolution creates a paradox.</span></p><p><span>Modern organizations are the product of more than a century of optimization.</span></p><p><span>For decades, they have specialized in reducing uncertainty through the division of labor, standardization, functional specialization, management by objectives, performance metrics, control procedures and process automation.</span></p><p><span>This architecture has delivered extraordinary gains in productivity.</span></p><p><span>But it rests on a fundamental assumption: that problems can be isolated, assigned to specialized areas of expertise and coordinated once each function has done its part.</span></p><p><span>That assumption is becoming increasingly untenable.</span></p><p><span>When multiple systems interact continuously, no single discipline possesses a sufficiently complete understanding of the situation. Decisions emerge from the confrontation of partial perspectives&#8212;sometimes contradictory, yet all legitimate.</span></p><p><span>The central question is therefore no longer simply:</span></p><p><span>How do we optimize an organization?</span></p><p><span>It has become:</span></p><p><span>How do we preserve an organization&#8217;s ability to govern realities whose boundaries no longer coincide with its own?</span></p><h2><span>Governance as an Adaptive Capability</span></h2><p><span>This transformation fundamentally changes what it means to govern.</span></p><p><span>For a long time, effective governance relied largely on information asymmetry. Decision-makers were those who had access to the most relevant information, could consolidate it more quickly than others, make decisions, oversee execution and ensure operational coherence.</span></p><p><span>That equation is changing.</span></p><p><span>Information is no longer the scarce resource it once was.</span></p><p><span>What is becoming scarce is the ability to build a shared understanding from information that is abundant, fragmented, often contradictory and increasingly mediated by algorithmic systems.</span></p><p><span>Today, governance is becoming less about control than about preserving a set of collective capabilities.</span></p><p><span>The ability to understand what is truly changing beneath the noise.</span></p><p><span>The ability to develop a shared understanding of situations that no individual perceives in their entirety.</span></p><p><span>The ability to bring together diverse forms of expertise without prematurely eliminating disagreement.</span></p><p><span>The ability to detect weak signals before they become visible crises.</span></p><p><span>The ability to arbitrate between economic, technological, geopolitical, regulatory and societal logics that rarely align naturally.</span></p><p><span>And ultimately, the ability to learn faster than the environment itself is changing.</span></p><p><span>These capabilities do not depend solely on individual leadership, nor exclusively on the quality of organizational processes.</span></p><p><span>They depend on the way an organization enables people to share information, challenge one another&#8217;s assumptions, connect different forms of expertise, build common understanding and make decisions despite uncertainty.</span></p><p><span>In other words, they are properties of the human system that every organization constitutes: the quality of its interactions, its mechanisms for cooperation, its spaces for deliberation, its approaches to arbitration and its capacity for collective learning.</span></p><h2><span>The First Signs Are Already Emerging</span></h2><p><span>The organizations most exposed to today&#8217;s transformations are increasingly investing in these governance capabilities.</span></p><p><span>The expansion of integrated risk management functions, the development of cyber operations centers, the creation of strategic foresight units, the growing adoption of enterprise risk management frameworks, the emergence of dedicated geopolitical analysis teams within corporations, and the strengthening of interministerial coordination mechanisms across governments all point in the same direction.</span></p><p><span>Organizations are becoming less concerned with predicting everything than with connecting dispersed information in ways that preserve their capacity for discernment as multiple systems interact.</span></p><p><span>Companies such as Maersk, profoundly transformed by the NotPetya cyberattack in 2017, have demonstrated that resilience depends as much on human coordination as on technical infrastructure.</span></p><p><span>Industrial groups such as Siemens and Schneider Electric have progressively integrated digital, energy and cybersecurity considerations into unified operating models, illustrating how the traditional boundaries between industrial systems and information systems are disappearing.</span></p><p><span>At the level of governments, the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that public health decisions could no longer be separated from economic, educational, logistical, social and political considerations, exposing the limitations of governance models built around administrative silos.</span></p><p><span>These examples do not yet amount to a fully established model.</span></p><p><span>What they reveal is something more fundamental.</span></p><p><span>Organizations are beginning to cultivate a capability that is becoming increasingly rare: the ability to maintain a coherent understanding of reality as systems become ever more interconnected.</span></p><p><span>Perhaps this is the defining governance challenge of our century.</span></p><p><span>The great transformations of the twenty-first century are not simply producing new systems.</span></p><p><span>They are redefining the relationships between them.</span></p><p><span>And it is within that expanding web of interactions that the future of governance is likely to be decided.</span></p><h4>About Human Dynamics Group</h4><p><strong>Human Dynamics Group&#174; Others explored the future of work or the growing difficulty of planning major infrastructures &#8212; transportation, defense, energy production&#8212;whose consequences unfold over decades.</span></p><p><span>All these discussions echo into a reality that many leaders already experience:</span></p><p><span>Priorities keep accumulating.</span></p><p><span>Trade-offs become increasingly difficult.</span></p><p><span>Decisions involve more stakeholders and more data.</span></p><p><span>Teams sometimes struggle to share the same understanding of a situation.</span></p><p><span>A growing sense emerges that the challenge is no longer simply to decide, but to know how to decide.</span></p><p><span>Behind all these questions lies another one that is equally strategic:</span></p><p><span>How can organizations continue to produce coherent decisions when information multiplies, constraints accumulate, timelines overlap, and every decision depends on an increasing number of variables?</span></p><p><span>What we often describe through concepts such as complexity, acceleration, or uncertainty could perhaps be expressed more simply:</span></p><p><span>How can we continue to make decisions when systems become more complex than the mental, organizational, and institutional frameworks designed to govern them?</span></p><h1><span>When Complexity Changes Its Nature</span></h1><p><span>For a long time, governing primarily meant arbitrating.</span></p><p><span>It meant choosing between options, defining direction, and allocating resources.</span></p><p><span>During the decades that followed the Second World War, major public and private institutions were built around an implicit assumption: the future would never be perfectly predictable, but it would remain sufficiently stable to allow planning, projection, and coordinated action.</span></p><p><span>This assumption shaped the development of states, infrastructure systems, large corporations, energy networks, and transportation systems.</span></p><p><span>Today, the challenge is different.</span></p><p><span>Decision-makers are not simply facing more uncertainty.</span></p><p><span>They operate within systems whose components are becoming increasingly interconnected.</span></p><p><span>Technological developments influence geopolitical balances.</span></p><p><span>Energy constraints shape industrial strategies.</span></p><p><span>Regulatory choices influence investment decisions.</span></p><p><span>Demographic shifts transform labor markets.</span></p><p><span>Algorithms influence human behavior, which in turn influences the data used to train algorithms.</span></p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong><span>Every decision now generates consequences that spread across multiple systems simultaneously.</span></strong></p></div><p><span>The challenge is therefore no longer simply to choose between alternatives.</span></p><p><span>It is increasingly to understand the system well enough for the choice itself to retain meaning.</span></p><p><span>Consider transportation infrastructure.</span></p><p><span>For a long time, the questions seemed relatively straightforward: where should we build? How should we finance it? What benefits can be expected in terms of mobility and economic development?</span></p><p><span>Today, the same decision simultaneously involves energy considerations, climate objectives, budgetary constraints, demographic trends, industrial priorities, technological developments, geopolitical realities, and sometimes even military concerns.</span></p><p><span>A railway line, a port, an airport, or a logistics corridor no longer responds solely to a transportation need.</span></p><p><span>These infrastructures also contribute to economic sovereignty, supply chain resilience, energy transition, territorial development, and national security.</span></p><p><span>The challenge is therefore no longer simply to choose between projects.</span></p><p><span>It is to understand how each decision interacts with multiple systems whose logic may sometimes conflict.</span></p><p><span>Consider another example.</span></p><p><span>For many industrial and technology companies, Taiwan is no longer merely a geopolitical issue.</span></p><p><span>It directly affects supply chains, production capacity, industrial investments, cybersecurity, trade relations with China, U.S. regulations, and, in some cases, business continuity itself.</span></p><p><span>Should production be relocated?</span></p><p><span>Should suppliers be diversified?</span></p><p><span>Should investments be redirected to other regions?</span></p><p><span>Should sourcing strategies be redesigned?</span></p><p><span>None of these decisions is purely economic.</span></p><p><span>They simultaneously involve financial, technological, geopolitical, regulatory, and operational considerations.</span></p><p><span>And similar examples could be found across almost every sector today.</span></p><p><span>In such an environment, the challenge is no longer simply access to information.</span></p><p><span>It is the ability to build a sufficiently coherent representation of a constantly evolving situation to make relevant decisions despite uncertainty.</span></p><p><span>A simple analogy helps illustrate this shift.</span></p><p><span>For a long time, governing resembled a journey in which the destination, the roads, and the main obstacles were relatively well known.</span></p><p><span>The role of the decision-maker was primarily to select the best route.</span></p><p><span>Today, the situation increasingly resembles a GPS that must continuously recalculate its path because roads change, new obstacles emerge, weather conditions evolve, and even the destination itself may shift.</span></p><p><span>The challenge is no longer simply choosing a direction.</span></p><p><span>It is continually rebuilding a sufficiently reliable understanding of reality to determine which direction still makes sense.</span></p><h1><span>What Is Becoming Truly Strategic</span></h1><p><span>This challenge does not affect businesses alone.</span></p><p><span>It also affects public institutions, infrastructure systems, healthcare organizations, territories, and societies more broadly.</span></p><p><span>Everywhere, decision-makers face a similar difficulty: acting in environments where information multiplies faster than the collective capacity to integrate it.</span></p><p><span>This is why leadership, although important, no longer appears sufficient on its own.</span></p><p><span>Developing stronger leaders, improving their capabilities, and strengthening individual competencies remain necessary.</span></p><p><span>But these efforts address only part of the challenge.</span></p><p><span>The issue is becoming broader.</span></p><p><span>More systemic.</span></p><p><span>The question is no longer simply: Who decides?</span></p><p><span>It is increasingly becoming: Under what conditions can groups of people still build a sufficiently shared understanding of reality to coordinate action?</span></p><p><span>The challenge does not emerge because information is missing.</span></p><p><span>It emerges when people possess different information, interpret the same events differently, or pursue objectives that become increasingly difficult to reconcile.</span></p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong><span>Within organizations, this evolution is already visible through very concrete difficulties: aligning priorities, coordinating decisions across functions, arbitrating between competing constraints, and maintaining a common direction in increasingly fluid environments.</span></strong></p></div><p><span>In this context, what becomes strategic is not only the quality of individuals.</span></p><p><span>It is the capacity of the system to:</span></p><p><span>&#8226; maintain understandable priorities;</span></p><p><span>&#8226; coordinate decisions across multiple levels;</span></p><p><span>&#8226; arbitrate between competing constraints;</span></p><p><span>&#8226; Yet technologies only become decisive when they are embedded within systems capable of aligning institutions, research, capital, industry, and governance. The definition of the twenty-first century may therefore be less technological than civilization.</p><h1>&#129718;&#129718;&#129718;</h1><p>As competition around artificial intelligence intensifies, a particular narrative is increasingly shaping political, economic, and strategic discourse. The powers of the twenty-first century, we are told, will be those that master the most advanced technologies. Algorithms, semiconductors, computing infrastructure, and data-processing capabilities are becoming the new determinants of power.</p><p>This view possesses considerable intuitive appeal. After all, the major economic transformations of history have often been associated with technological breakthroughs: the steam engine, electricity, the internal combustion engine, computing, and the internet.</p><p>Yet this perspective contains a blind spot.</p><p>It assumes that technology mechanically produces power.</p><p>History suggests something more complex.</p><p>Technologies expand the realm of possibility. They open new trajectories. They create opportunities. But they do not, by themselves, determine a society&#8217;s ability to transform those opportunities into enduring power.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Between innovation and power lies an often-overlooked variable: coordination.</strong></p></div><p>The defining competition of the twenty-first century may ultimately be less about technology itself than about the ability of human systems to coordinate around technology.</p><p>History offers many examples of this distinction.</p><p>Imperial China possessed several major innovations long before Europe, including gunpowder, the compass, and printing. At times, its technological lead was substantial. Yet this advantage did not translate into the kind of enduring global dominance later achieved by certain European powers.</p><p>Sixteenth-century Spain controlled unprecedented flows of wealth. The massive influx of silver from the New World provided extraordinary resources. Yet the possession of resources did not automatically generate lasting economic power. The institutional and productive capacities required to transform wealth into a systemic advantage remained more limited. These resources financed imperial power, but they proved far less effective in building the economic, industrial, and financial institutions capable of converting wealth into a durable collective advantage.</p><p>The Soviet Union offers another instructive example. It achieved remarkable scientific feats. It launched the first artificial satellite and sent the first human into space. Its researchers competed with the world&#8217;s best scientists. Yet economic, institutional, and political coordination failures ultimately constrained its capacity to adapt.</p><p>These examples do not suggest that technology is secondary.</p><p>They suggest something else.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Power never emerges from technology alone.</strong></p></div><p>It emerges when institutions, organizations, financing mechanisms, infrastructures, and decision-making systems function coherently enough to transform technical capability into collective capability.</p><p>Technology is not power.</p><p>It is potential for power.</p><p>This distinction becomes particularly important today.</p><p>When we observe the massive investments being poured into artificial intelligence, our attention naturally gravitates toward the models themselves: their sophistication, scale, performance, and emerging capabilities.</p><p>Yet the models represent only the visible part of the equation.</p><p>Behind every breakthrough lie energy infrastructures, computing facilities, global supply chains, educational systems, financial markets, industrial capabilities, regulatory frameworks, research laboratories, and governance mechanisms.</p><p>No single actor controls this entire ecosystem.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Artificial intelligence is therefore a profoundly systemic technology.</strong></p></div><p>Its deployment requires simultaneous coordination across domains that have long operated according to distinct logics: scientific research, finance, industry, infrastructure, energy, Defense, regulation, and governance. It also depends on collective learning capabilities, mechanisms of trust, and sufficient legitimacy to sustain action over time.</p><p>The performance of a system depends less on any individual component than on the quality of the relationships between them.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The more powerful technologies become, the less the decisive factor remains.</strong></p></div><p>Instead, they increasingly reveal the quality of the human systems responsible for directing them.</p><p>Viewed from this perspective, current debates about AI point to something that extends far beyond artificial intelligence itself.</p><p>They reveal a deeper transformation in power.</p><p>Throughout much of the industrial era, the accumulation of resources represented the primary limiting factor: coal, steel, oil, labor, and capital.</p><p>Today, resources remain essential, but they are no longer necessarily the scarcest variable.</p><p>Data, algorithms, and computing capacity can be accumulated.</p><p>The ability to coordinate complex human systems over time may become the true limiting factor of power.</p><p>For centuries, coordination primarily meant organizing resources, territories, and populations.</p><p>Today, systems must simultaneously coordinate information flows, digital infrastructures, global value chains, rapidly evolving technologies, and actors pursuing divergent interests.</p><p>Complexity is increasing faster than the institutional capacities designed to govern it.</p><p>How do we coordinate thousands of organizations, align different time horizons, and maintain a shared direction amid uncertainty?</p><p>How do we balance innovation, security, efficiency, and legitimacy?</p><p>How do we act collectively when the environment becomes more complex than the structures designed to govern it?</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>These questions are less technical than profoundly human.</strong></p></div><p>They concern governance, institutions, mechanisms of cooperation, trust, and, perhaps most importantly, our ability to sustain a shared representation of reality.</p><p>Coordination always depends on some form of common reality.</p><p>Actors must share certain fundamental assumptions about what matters, what threatens them, and what deserves protection.</p><p>Yet this capacity appears increasingly strained.</p><p>Artificial intelligence provides a striking illustration. Depending on the observer, it is viewed as an economic revolution, a question of sovereignty, an existential risk, or an issue of social justice.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Multiple realities coexist around the same technology.</strong></p></div><p>The same phenomenon can be observed in debates surrounding climate transition or international security, where disagreements often concern not the solutions themselves but the very definition of the problem.</p><p>The challenge facing contemporary societies is not a lack of information.</p><p>We possess more information than at any point in history.</p><p>The challenge is our growing difficulty in transforming this abundance of information into sufficiently stable shared understandings capable of supporting collective action.</p><p>Current debates around artificial intelligence in Europe illustrate this tension. Some view regulation as a necessary condition for sovereignty and trust. Others see it primarily as a threat to competitiveness and innovation. The disagreement concerns not only the policy response but the nature of the strategic challenge itself.</p><p>A similar dynamic is visible in questions of security and defense. Across many European countries, perceptions of threat have increased significantly in recent years. It may reveal a deeper transformation: the growing difficulty of prioritizing in a world where risks multiply faster than our collective ability to determine what matters most.</p><p>What happens to decision-making when everything becomes a priority?</p><h1>&#129718;&#129718;&#129718;</h1><h2>What happens to decision-making when everything becomes urgent?</h2><p>Rarely have human systems faced so many simultaneous reasons to feel a sense of urgency. As wars return to the center of international affairs, artificial intelligence accelerates, energy and climate transitions become more complex, trade tensions intensify, and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, leaders increasingly confront a new challenge: almost every issue now appears strategically essential.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>For a long time, information was the scarce resource. Today, scarcity has shifted. What is becoming scarce is the ability to establish credible priorities.</strong></p></div><p>The distinction may seem subtle. It is anything but.</p><p>Human systems have always had to navigate competing demands. Governments, institutions, companies, and communities have long operated in environments marked by uncertainty, conflict, and disruption.</p><p>Yet something appears to have changed.</p><p>We no longer live merely in a world where problems are multiplying. We live in a world where an increasing number of problems can legitimately claim to be the most important one.</p><p>Climate adaptation. Geopolitical tensions. Cybersecurity. Artificial intelligence. Public debt. Mental health. Energy security. Industrial resilience. Migration. Disinformation. Infrastructure. Economic competitiveness.</p><p>None of these concerns is misplaced.</p><p>That is precisely the problem.</p><h3><strong>The Contemporary Paradox: When Everything Becomes Critical</strong></h3><p>Human systems have historically been built around a fundamental function: selection.</p><p>To govern is to select.</p><p>To lead is to select.</p><p>To decide is to select.</p><p>Prioritization is not a secondary feature of power. It is one of its core functions.</p><p>Yet prioritization depends on a rarely discussed condition: the existence of meaningful differences between levels of urgency.</p><p>When threats emerge separately over time, trade-offs remain possible.</p><p>When they converge simultaneously, traditional mechanisms of prioritization begin to weaken.</p><p>A paradox emerges.</p><p>The more information systems generate about their vulnerabilities and risks, the harder it becomes to determine which of them should organize collective action.</p><p>Like a pilot suddenly confronted with a cockpit in which every warning light turns amber or red at once, contemporary systems receive an expanding number of alerts without necessarily possessing a clear mechanism for ranking them. Beyond a certain point, the challenge is no longer a lack of information. It is determining which signal should guide the trajectory.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>More knowledge does not automatically produce greater clarity.</strong></p></div><p>Sometimes it produces greater indecision.</p><h3><strong>Acceleration Eliminates the Distance Between Problems</strong></h3><p>Part of this phenomenon originates in the broader acceleration of modern systems.</p><p>Sociologist Hartmut Rosa has argued that contemporary societies are experiencing a progressive compression of social time. This does not simply mean that events happen faster. It means that developments once separated by years&#8212;or even decades&#8212;now enter the same decision-making horizon.</p><p>Within a single week, a leader may face a supply chain disruption, a cyberattack, a regulatory shift, a reputational crisis, a major technological breakthrough, and geopolitical instability.</p><p>Crises are no longer sequential.</p><p>They are increasingly simultaneous.</p><p>Yet most decision-making architectures inherited from the twentieth century were designed to address problems one after another, not to manage permanent layers of overlapping risks.</p><p>The inflation of priorities is, in part, a structural consequence of this compression of time.</p><h3><strong>Interdependence Makes Every Issue Potentially Systemic</strong></h3><p>A second dynamic amplifies the phenomenon.</p><p>Contemporary systems are vastly more interconnected than those of previous generations.</p><p>An energy decision affects industrial capacity.</p><p>Industrial policy affects geopolitics.</p><p>Geopolitical tensions affect supply chains.</p><p>Technological decisions affect employment, security, sovereignty, and collective cognition.</p><p>The boundaries between issues become increasingly difficult to define.</p><p>The result is paradoxical.</p><p>The more interconnected systems become, the easier it is to argue that any given issue is strategic.</p><p>And the easier it becomes to argue that every issue is strategic, the harder it becomes to demonstrate that any issue is not.</p><p>The inflation of priorities also emerges from this growing inability to contain the consequences of a problem within a single domain.</p><h3><strong>The Attention Economy Turns Alerts into Survival Mechanisms</strong></h3><p>Another transformation is less visible.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>In an environment saturated with information, attention becomes a scarce resource.</strong></p></div><p>And whenever a resource becomes scarce, competition intensifies.</p><p>Institutions, media organizations, experts, advocacy groups, corporations, researchers, and public agencies increasingly operate in ecosystems where attention determines influence, legitimacy, funding, and access to decision-makers.</p><p>An unexpected consequence follows.</p><p>Every actor has a rational incentive to frame its issue as urgent.</p><p>Sometimes as existential.</p><p>The result is a competitive inflation of urgency.</p><p>This is not necessarily manipulation.</p><p>More often, it is a normal adaptation to the economics of attention.</p><p>At a collective level, however, the outcome is a permanent background noise in which warning signals become increasingly difficult to distinguish from one another.</p><h3><strong>The Shrinking Horizon of Time Weakens Prioritization</strong></h3><p>Prioritization also depends on a stable relationship with time.</p><p>That relationship appears increasingly fragile.</p><p>Across many human systems, decision horizons are contracting shorter political cycles, real-time performance metrics, instant media dynamics, immediate public reactions, and relentless financial pressures.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The long term has not disappeared.</strong></p><p><strong>But it has lost part of its organizing power.</strong></p></div><p>Systems become increasingly sensitive to what is nearby.</p><p>And when time horizons shrink, distinctions between urgencies begin to blur.</p><p>Everything closer appears equally important.</p><p>Everything beyond the immediate horizon becomes harder to defend.</p><p>Prioritization requires distance.</p><p>Acceleration steadily erodes that distance.</p><h3><strong>The Ultimate Risk: Generalized Criticality Paralysis</strong></h3><p>The inflation of priorities ultimately produces a phenomenon that receives surprisingly little attention.</p><p>Beyond a certain threshold, the accumulation of urgencies no longer generates more action.</p><p>It begins to generate the opposite.</p><p>Human systems enter a state that might be described as generalized criticality paralysis.</p><p>Every issue appears important enough to justify mobilization.</p><p>Yet no issue succeeds in organizing that mobilization for long.</p><p>The European Union offers a useful illustration. Yet its most profound effect inside organizations may be quite different. By encouraging alignment, synthesis, and convergence in reasoning, AI could gradually reduce the cognitive diversity that human systems need in order to adapt. The risk may not be that machines think for us, but that they help make our organizations more conformist at precisely the moment they need greater divergence.</p><h1>&#129718;&#129718;&#129718;</h1><h2>Can a technology designed to expand intelligence end up narrowing collective judgment?</h2><p>For the first wave of digital transformation, the promise was straightforward. Information would flow more freely. Organizational silos would disappear. Decisions would become faster, more data-driven, and ultimately more effective.</p><p>Two decades later, artificial intelligence is accompanied by a remarkably similar narrative.</p><p>Yet something fundamentally different is happening.</p><p>AI does not simply accelerate the circulation of information. It increasingly shapes the conditions under which judgment is formed. It influences how problems are framed, how priorities are ranked, how alternatives are generated, and how solutions are evaluated.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>In other words, AI is beginning to operate upstream of decision-making itself.</strong></p></div><p>This distinction matters.</p><p>For decades, organizational power was primarily exercised through decisions. Today, it is gradually extending into the cognitive frameworks through which decisions become conceivable in the first place.</p><p>The shift remains subtle, but a growing number of signals suggest that it is already underway.</p><p>A recent BetterUp survey found that 54% of managers report receiving what has become known as &#8220;AI workslop&#8221; &#8212; content that appears polished, coherent, and professional, yet lacks genuine insight or discernment.</p><p>The problem with workslop is not that it is wrong.</p><p>The problem is that it is plausible.</p><p>The report looks credible.<br>The summary feels useful.<br>The recommendation sounds reasonable.</p><p>And yet, once consumed, little understanding has actually been generated.</p><p>What appears at first to be a quality issue may in fact reveal something deeper: a growing confusion between the production of content and the production of judgment.</p><p>Workslop, however, is probably only the visible symptom of a broader transformation.</p><p>The more consequential question lies elsewhere.</p><p>Across organizations, AI is increasingly used to clarify, summarize, structure, synthesize, and align.</p><p>These verbs appear neutral.</p><p>They are not.</p><p>Summarizing means prioritizing.</p><p>Structuring means imposing a logic.</p><p>Clarifying often means reducing ambiguity.</p><p>Aligning frequently means reducing divergence.</p><p>Every cognitive operation contains an implicit worldview.</p><p>Every summary elevates certain information while marginalizing other possibilities.</p><p>Every reformulation subtly alters meaning.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The question therefore becomes less technological than political.</strong></p></div><p>What happens when a growing share of an organization&#8217;s intellectual activity passes through the same cognitive systems?</p><p>Consider a simple example.</p><p>A company begins experiencing unusually high employee turnover.</p><p>Before AI, several interpretations might emerge simultaneously. Some leaders would view the issue as a compensation problem. Others might point to a crisis of purpose, a leadership challenge, shifting cultural expectations, or changing generational dynamics.</p><p>These competing interpretations could create friction.</p><p>But that friction served a purpose.</p><p>It forced the organization to explore multiple representations of reality.</p><p>Today, the first instinct is often to ask:</p><p>&#8220;Analyze the causes of employee turnover.&#8221;</p><p>The machine does not make the decision.</p><p>Yet it immediately begins structuring the terrain on which the discussion will take place.</p><p>It selects variables.<br>It prioritizes causal relationships.<br>It organizes a narrative.</p><p>Long before the debate begins, it implicitly shapes what deserves attention and what does not.</p><p>This is where one of the most significant shifts may be occurring.</p><p>Power no longer resides solely in the final decision.</p><p>It increasingly resides in the way reality itself is rendered intelligible.</p><p>The implications may be more far-reaching than they first appear.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>For decades, organizations have treated consensus as a sign of maturity.</strong></p></div><p>Good managers create alignment.</p><p>Good leaders bring people together.</p><p>Good governance reduces conflict.</p><p>This logic has deeply shaped modern organizational culture.</p><p>Yet in an environment defined by volatility, uncertainty, and accelerating change, the equation becomes less obvious.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Human systems do not evolve through cohesion alone.</strong></p></div><p>They also evolve through tension.</p><p>Major transformations rarely emerge from consensus.</p><p>They often emerge from persistent disagreement.</p><p>Weak signals almost always appear at the margins of dominant assumptions.</p><p>History repeatedly shows that minority voices sometimes see what the majority cannot.</p><p>The difficulty is that such voices rarely appear reasonable when they first emerge.</p><p>Recent history offers a striking example.</p><p>In the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, several intelligence analysts in both the United States and Europe expressed reservations about the evidence surrounding weapons of mass destruction. The available information was ambiguous, and interpretations differed significantly. Yet as a dominant narrative consolidated, alternative assessments gradually lost visibility and influence. Looking back, the issue appears not to have been a lack of information but a declining capacity to assign sufficient weight to interpretations that challenged the prevailing assumption.</p><p>The data existed.</p><p>What diminished was the diversity of interpretations.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>AI, by its very nature, tends toward a different dynamic.</strong></p></div><p>It produces statistically probable responses.<br>It favors socially acceptable formulations.<br>It smooths rough edges.<br>It reduces extremes.<br>It brings positions closer together.</p><p>This tendency is not ideological.</p><p>It emerges from the architecture itself: identifying and reproducing dominant patterns across vast bodies of data.</p><p>In that sense, AI naturally promotes convergence.</p><p>This search for convergence is not new.</p><p>For several decades, organizations have increasingly rewarded those capable of smoothing interactions, reducing tensions, and maintaining cohesion. In my recent book <em>The Power of Connection (<a href="https://www.edipro.be/editions/gestion-management/le-pouvoir-du-lien/">FR version only</a>)</em>, I describe this dynamic through what I call Level 3 of the Relational Evolution Scale (RES): the stage at which leaders become, above all else, architects of consensus.</p><p>For a long time, this posture was a strength.</p><p>In relatively stable environments, it encourages cooperation, reduces friction, and facilitates execution. Yet when a system enters a period of profound transformation, the very same pursuit of harmony can gradually become a limitation. When every rough edge is smoothed away, the early warning signals of change are often silenced as well.</p><p>Convergence is undoubtedly a powerful asset when it comes to synthesizing information. But it can become a weakness when preserving cognitive diversity. Adaptation rarely depends on a system&#8217;s ability to reproduce dominant patterns of thinking. It depends on its ability to detect what still lies beyond them.</p><p>A paradox begins to emerge.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Information abundance can conceal a scarcity of divergence.</strong></p></div><p>Organizations may produce more reports, more analyses, more scenarios, and more ideas while simultaneously exploring an increasingly narrow cognitive landscape.</p><p>The quantity grows.</p><p>The apparent variety grows as well.</p><p>Yet beneath that abundance, cognitive diversity may be quietly shrinking.</p><p>As the same systems are repeatedly used to explore the same questions, familiar patterns of reasoning reappear, the same blind spots are reproduced, and similar solutions begin to dominate. It is no longer only the answers that converge.</p><p>The intellectual pathways themselves become increasingly alike.</p><p>This raises a question that remains largely absent from current debates about artificial intelligence.</p><p>Do organizations still need disagreement?</p><p>The answer may seem obvious.</p><p>Yet most contemporary systems are designed to reduce it.</p><p>Disagreement slows things down.</p><p>It complicates decision-making.</p><p>It generates uncertainty.</p><p>It disrupts coordination.</p><p>And yet it remains one of the most important drivers of adaptation, both individual and collective.</p><p>In relatively stable environments, consensus is often highly effective.</p><p>In rapidly changing environments, however, divergence becomes a strategic resource.</p><p>It allows organizations to explore alternative futures.</p><p>It reveals blind spots.</p><p>Most importantly, it protects systems from becoming trapped by their own assumptions.</p><p>Natural ecosystems offer a useful analogy.</p><p>Their resilience does not emerge from uniformity but from diversity.</p><p>A seemingly marginal species can suddenly become essential when environmental conditions shift. What appeared unnecessary yesterday may become critical tomorrow.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Biodiversity functions as a reservoir of adaptive capacity in the face of uncertainty.</strong></p><p><strong>Human systems appear to follow a similar logic.</strong></p></div><p>Minority opinions, dissenting intuitions, and unconventional interpretations often play the same role. It may be how much acceleration human systems can absorb.</strong></p><div><hr></div><p>History is not unfamiliar with this tension.</p><p>Civilizations do not become fragile only when they lack resources, inventions, or energy.</p><p>They also become fragile when their mechanisms of coordination, legitimacy, and regulation become too slow for the world they themselves have created.</p><p>Rome did not fall because it lacked administration.</p><p>If anything, it may have had too much of it.</p><p>What it increasingly lacked was the capacity to contain the complexity it was required to govern.</p><p>The Western Roman Empire faced a cumulative convergence of military, fiscal, demographic, and political pressures. Rome was sacked in 410; the last Western emperor was deposed in 476.</p><p>Yet these dates obscure a slower process: the gradual erosion of a system&#8217;s ability to integrate into a reality that had become too vast, too costly, too exposed, and too difficult to stabilize.</p><p>In <em>The Collapse of Complex Societies</em>, Joseph Tainter proposed a powerful interpretation.</p><p>Complex societies collapse when the marginal returns of complexity begin to decline.</p><p>In other words, they continue to add layers of response&#8212;bureaucracies, armies, taxation systems, controls, regulations&#8212;but each new layer solves fewer problems than it creates.</p><p>The idea resonates strikingly with contemporary organizations.</p><p>Faced with acceleration, they add tools.</p><p>Then processes to coordinate the tools.</p><p>Then dashboards to monitor the processes.</p><p>Then AI systems to summarize the dashboards.</p><p>Complexity becomes its own solution.</p><p>But it can also become its own limitation.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>Civilizations do not become fragile only when they lack resources. They also become fragile when their mechanisms of coordination become too slow for the world they themselves have created.</strong></p><div><hr></div><p>The invention of printing offers another precedent.</p><p>It did not merely spread books.</p><p>It altered the speed at which authority circulated.</p><p>In Europe, the mechanization of printing during the fifteenth century made texts cheaper, more abundant, and more accessible.</p><p>Before the printing press, handwritten books were counted in the thousands. They are now entering an era of persistent ambiguity, overlapping tensions, and hybrid realities&#8212;one that places unprecedented demands on their human capacities for judgment, cooperation, and governance.</p><h1>&#129718;&#129718;&#129718;</h1><p>In 2024, as global computing power reaches unprecedented levels, as organizations have access to more data than at any other point in economic history, and as management systems become increasingly sophisticated, a paradoxical phenomenon appears to be quietly unfolding across contemporary organizations: many seem more disoriented than ever.</p><p>Boards demand visibility in environments that have become increasingly unpredictable. Leaders multiply control mechanisms even as decision-making cycles continue to compress. Teams absorb a constant stream of contradictory information, continuous reorganizations, successive technological disruptions, and geopolitical tensions that constantly reshape the conditions under which economic activity takes place.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The End of a Legible Organizational World</strong></p></div><p>By <em>human systems</em>, we mean the organized structures through which individuals cooperate, exercise authority, make decisions, coordinate actions, and create collective meaning: companies, institutions, governments, leadership teams, governance structures, professional networks, and social organizations. In other words, the human architectures through which modern societies function.</p><p>Never before have these human systems possessed so many tools to analyze reality.</p><p>Yet rarely has reality seemed so difficult to interpret.</p><p>This tension is unlikely to be cyclical. It points to something deeper: modern organizations are gradually entering a world in which ambiguity is no longer a temporary anomaly but a permanent operating condition.</p><p>Most organizational architectures, however, were not designed for such a world.</p><p>They were built within a very different historical imagination.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Modern Organizations Were Built to Reduce Uncertainty</strong></p></div><p>For much of the twentieth century, modern organizations evolved within a relatively legible environment. Even major disruptions&#8212;oil shocks, wars, recessions, technological breakthroughs&#8212;still unfolded against a broader assumption that stability would eventually return.</p><p>Modern management emerged from that promise.</p><p>Frederick Taylor sought to rationalize industrial work. Peter Drucker sought to make organizations governable through coherent objectives. Public and private bureaucracies gradually refined systems designed to generate predictability at scale through procedures, hierarchies, reporting structures, standardization, planning, and control.</p><p>Even the rise of agile management remains largely embedded within this same logic. Its purpose is not so much to inhabit uncertainty as to absorb it more effectively in order to restore stability.</p><p>But the contemporary challenge may be fundamentally different.</p><p>We are not simply facing more uncertainty.</p><p>We are facing a transformation in the very conditions that make the world intelligible.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Ambiguity Becomes a Permanent Condition</strong></p></div><p>For years, German sociologist Hartmut Rosa has described a dynamic of &#8220;social acceleration&#8221; in which modern institutions progressively lose their ability to synchronize with the pace of technological, economic, and cultural transformation.</p><p>The issue extends far beyond the speed of work.</p><p>It increasingly affects the cognitive stability of human systems themselves.</p><p>Technological cycles are shortening faster than organizational adaptation cycles. Regulatory frameworks struggle to keep pace with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. Global supply chains have become geopolitically vulnerable. Information environments generate volumes of signals that no human mind can realistically process in a coherent way.</p><p>According to a Microsoft study published in 2023, the average employee is interrupted every two minutes by notifications, messages, meetings, or digital requests. Meanwhile, the World Economic Forum argues that the multiplication of simultaneous crises&#8212;climate-related, geopolitical, cyber, energy, and informational&#8212;has created a state of permanent polycrisis in which systems rarely enjoy sufficient periods of stabilization to absorb successive shocks.</p><p>The challenge, therefore, is no longer complexity alone.</p><p>It is the permanence of disorientation.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>When Organizations Respond to Ambiguity with More Control</strong></p></div><p>Faced with this reality, many organizations respond by intensifying control.</p><p>More dashboards. More metrics. More reporting. More procedures. More collaborative platforms. More governance structures. More data.</p><p>As though the accumulation of information could somehow restore a lost sense of clarity.</p><p>Yet this response often produces an unexpected paradox: as organizations attempt to reduce ambiguity through increasingly mechanized forms of decision-making, they may simultaneously weaken the very human capacities for judgment they need in order to navigate ambiguity.</p><p>Karl Weick, whose work on organizational sensemaking remains highly influential, argued decades ago that organizations survive not merely because they operate efficiently, but because they are capable of creating shared meaning in equivocal situations.</p><p>Today, that capability appears increasingly fragile.</p><p>Contemporary ambiguity is not merely informational.</p><p>It is psychological.</p><p>Cultural.</p><p>Political.</p><p>Cognitive.</p><p>Individuals are increasingly forced to navigate competing narratives, conflicting temporalities, and contradictory expectations. Be agile yet stable. Move quickly yet remain cautious. Innovate while remaining compliant. Be transparent while ensuring security. Remain human while continuously improving performance.</p><p>The defining burden of our era is no longer simply workload.</p><p>It is interpretive overload.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The Silent Erosion of Collective Judgment</strong></p></div><p>This may be where the most significant fault line of modern organizations resides.</p><p>Human systems have historically depended upon a minimum level of cognitive stability to function effectively. They require a relatively shared perception of reality, recognizable priorities, and sufficient trust to sustain cooperation despite disagreement.</p><p>Yet these foundations are gradually eroding.</p><p>Digital environments fragment collective perception. Social media accelerates emotional dynamics. Media cycles increasingly shape organizational rhythms. Geopolitical tensions reintroduce instability into global dependencies that globalization had rendered largely invisible.</p><p>Even the nature of work itself is changing.</p><p>Hybrid work models are quietly reshaping professional socialization. Informal coordination spaces are disappearing. A growing share of human interaction now occurs through digital interfaces that increase the speed of communication while often reducing its relational depth.</p><p>In such an environment, sustaining collective judgment becomes extraordinarily difficult.</p><p>And yet very few organizations appear genuinely prepared for this anthropological shift.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The Technological Illusion of Coherence</strong></p></div><p>Artificial intelligence may intensify this tension even further.</p><p>AI offers organizations precisely what periods of disorientation tend to demand: speed, synthesis, cognitive assistance, automation, and reduced decision-making friction.</p><p>Yet it may also amplify some of the human vulnerabilities already emerging.</p><p>The more organizations automate analysis, the more central judgment becomes.</p><p>Hannah Arendt observed that judgment is not simply the application of rational rules. It is the ability to navigate situations in which the frameworks themselves become unstable.</p><p>Many of today&#8217;s most consequential decisions&#8212;geopolitical, environmental, societal, organizational&#8212;belong precisely to that category.</p><p>AI can generate recommendations.</p><p>It cannot resolve the existential ambiguity of human systems.</p><p>Indeed, it may sometimes create a dangerous illusion of coherence within a world that has become profoundly contradictory.</p><p>This may be one of the defining paradoxes of our historical moment: the more advanced our technological capabilities become, the more valuable non-automatable human capacities become.</p><p>Judgment.</p><p>The ability to hold complexity.</p><p>Cooperation under tension.</p><p>Relational maturity.</p><p>The capacity to sustain shared meaning amid instability.</p><p>In other words, precisely the capabilities modern organizations have often invested in the least.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>The Defining Challenge of the Coming Decades</strong></p></div><p>Perhaps the central challenge of the coming decades will not be technological.</p><p>It will be civilizational.</p><p>For nearly a century, modern human systems have refined architectures designed to produce stability within a relatively intelligible world. networks,<br>institutions,<br>couples,<br>groups,<br>and political spaces.</p><p>As if contemporary human systems were progressively losing some of their collective regulation capacities.</p><p>By &#8220;human systems&#8221;, we mean here our organizations, institutions, groups, families, networks and spaces of cooperation.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>We never perceive reality entirely alone</strong></p></div><p>We often speak about discernment as though it were an individual quality.</p><p>As if some individuals naturally possessed a better reading of situations.<br>A sharper intuition.<br>A clearer vision.</p><p>But in reality, our perception of the world depends deeply on the relationships surrounding us.</p><p>We need others to:<br>correct our blind spots,<br>temper our certainties,<br>circulate warnings,<br>express tensions,<br>put words to certain intuitions,<br>or simply help us see what we no longer perceive ourselves.</p><p>Human relationships therefore do not only serve to create connection.</p><p>They also help sustain a form of collective perception of reality.</p><p>And it is precisely this function that now appears increasingly fragile in many human environments.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>When human systems begin to rigidify</strong></p></div><p>Under pressure, human systems tend to close themselves off.</p><p>Individuals become more cautious.<br>Interactions become simplified.<br>Nuance disappears.<br>Reactions accelerate.<br>Disagreements become riskier.<br>Groups become more defensive.</p><p>In saturated environments, collective attention progressively shifts toward immediate reaction rather than deeper understanding.</p><p>Social media further intensifies this dynamic.</p><p>Speed rewards reaction more than reflection.<br>Emotion more than nuance.<br>Assertion more than exploration.</p><p>And the faster systems accelerate, the more humans risk losing spaces for perspective and reflection.</p><p>A human system deprived of perspective eventually begins confusing speed of reaction with quality of perception.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Silent tensions then become particularly dangerous</strong></p></div><p>Because human systems do not weaken only when they explode.</p><p>They also weaken when they progressively stop allowing certain realities to circulate.</p><p>At first, this often remains discreet.</p><p>Tensions are felt but rarely expressed.<br>Inconsistencies emerge.<br>Weak signals exist.<br>Warnings circulate indirectly.<br>Individuals perceive imbalances without truly managing to share them.</p><p>Then gradually, the collective system loses its ability to transform these diffuse perceptions into shared understanding.</p><p>This phenomenon has been widely studied in research on organizational disasters.</p><p>Sociologist Diane Vaughan notably demonstrated this in her analysis of the Challenger space shuttle explosion.</p><p>The anomalies were known.<br>The warning signs existed.<br>But progressively, the human system had normalized certain tensions.</p><p>Not because individuals were incompetent.</p><p>But because certain collective mechanisms of perception and regulation had gradually weakened.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>We may be underestimating one of the defining issues of our time</strong></p></div><p>We speak constantly about:<br>AI,<br>technology,<br>productivity,<br>transformation,<br>geopolitics,<br>polarization,<br>mental health,<br>and leadership.</p><p>But behind many of these subjects lies perhaps a deeper question:</p><p>What happens to human systems when they must absorb more speed, more complexity, more information and more tension than they are collectively capable of integrating?</p><p>Because ultimately, human systems do not weaken only when they lose resources or competencies.</p><p>They also weaken when they lose their collective ability to:<br>perceive,<br>interpret,<br>nuance,<br>regulate,<br>and maintain a sufficiently shared reading of reality.</p><div class="pullquote"><p><strong>Yet something else is also emerging</strong></p></div><p>This is perhaps one of the most interesting paradoxes of our time.</p><p>Because at the very same moment, we also see the emergence of:<br>new spaces for dialogue,<br>new forms of cooperation,<br>communities seeking to slow down,<br>collectives rebuilding trust,<br>leaders rethinking governance,<br>and individuals seeking more lucid and conscious relationships.</p><p>As though acceleration itself were progressively forcing certain human systems to invent new forms of regulation.</p><p>Perhaps this is precisely what today&#8217;s fault lines reveal.</p><p>Not only what is weakening.</p><p>But also what human systems are beginning to search for, rebuild and reinvent in order to preserve their capacity to continue living, cooperating and
